One to one guidance

A careers guidance interview is an impartial, one-to-one meeting between students and a professionally qualified careers adviser. A guidance interview can last about 45 minutes. A careers guidance interview is not like a job interview – there are no right or wrong answers.

During a guidance interview the careers adviser will help students to:

  • identify their personal qualities and skills
  • identify the skills they would like to develop
  • come up with ideas for study and work
  • explore specific career areas
  • explore current and future job opportunities
  • understand the process of job search, writing a CV and going for interviews
  • explore their interests, likes and dislikes, family influences, personal barriers and work experience
  • think about how study, work experience, and home-life can all contribute to their employability
  • A one-to-one careers guidance interview offers students a personalized and supportive environment to explore their future options, clarify their goals, and receive tailored advice on their career paths. These individual sessions are invaluable in helping students make informed decisions about their futures,
  • Students explore individual priorities, awareness of the range of options in learning and career pathways, and plot most appropriate next steps.
  • Each discussion is unique and personalised, with the aim of moving the student further down their career journey.
  • Students take away key resources and receive a typed action plan.

Direct benefits of a guidance interview

  • increased motivation and self- confidence
  • greater self-awareness
  • identification of more achievable ambitions
  • improved decision-making skills
  • increased awareness of opportunities
  • In a one-to-one interview, students receive guidance tailored specifically to their unique skills, interests, and aspirations. Career advisors can assess individual strengths and help students explore potential career paths or educational opportunities that align with their abilities, personality, and ambitions. This tailored advice increases the likelihood that students will make choices that lead to long-term satisfaction and success.
  • After discussing career options, a one-to-one interview ensures that students leave with clear, actionable next steps. Career advisors can provide guidance on specific actions, such as applying for courses, researching career paths, or preparing for job interviews. This clarity empowers students to take concrete steps toward achieving their goals and makes their transition from school to the next phase of their lives smoother and more focused.
  • During the interview, students often discover strengths they hadn’t previously recognized. By focusing on their abilities, talents, and potential, students are reminded of what they are capable of achieving. This realization is a powerful motivator, as students feel empowered to pursue opportunities that align with their skills and passions, knowing they have the potential to succeed.

Psychometric Testing

  • EC Careers can administer a careers guidance tool, a psychometric assessment to help students to identify potential career paths and make informed decisions about their study options. Participating students will take a 100-minute online assessment and questionnaire which measure a variety of elements including career interests, work attitudes, talents and motivations. Once the assessment is complete, students will have access to personally tailored career and education suggestions, plus a wealth of careers-related resources.

  • For many students, the idea of choosing a career path can be overwhelming. Psychometric assessments provide tangible data that can guide their decisions, giving students confidence that they are making choices aligned with their strengths and interests. This reassurance can help reduce anxiety around the future.
  • Psychometric assessments offer valuable insights for career advisers and mentors, allowing them to provide personalized advice based on the individual student’s results. This ensures that career guidance is tailored to the specific needs and preferences of each student, improving the effectiveness of the advice and support they receive.
  • The assessment can introduce students to a wide range of careers they may not have considered, based on their unique traits and preferences. This opens up new possibilities, encouraging them to explore paths they might not have otherwise discovered.

  • A psychometric assessment helps students identify their natural strengths, skills, and areas for improvement. This self-awareness is critical in guiding them toward careers that align with their abilities and personal attributes, ensuring they make informed choices about their future.
  • Psychometric tests measure personality traits, work preferences, and values, giving students a clearer idea of the types of work environments, tasks, and industries they may be most comfortable in. This clarity can help students avoid careers that might not be a good fit for their skills or personality, saving them time and frustration in the long run.
  • With the data from a psychometric assessment, students can make more informed decisions about their educational and career paths. Whether they are choosing between further education options, apprenticeships, or entering the workforce, the insights from the assessment offer a clearer direction, helping them feel confident in their choices

Parent Evenings

We provide a dedicated space during parents’ evenings to offer one-on-one career guidance for both students and their parents. Our expert team is available to discuss career options, educational pathways, and the skills needed for various industries, helping parents understand how to best support their child’s career journey.

Our tailored support at parents’ evenings is designed to engage parents in their child’s career development. By providing expert guidance and resources, we help families better understand the career pathways available to their children and how they can support their aspirations at home.

  • Parents often play a pivotal role in shaping their child’s career decisions. By providing them with the information and tools to guide their children, we ensure that parents are well-equipped to have informed conversations and offer valuable support at home.
  • Schools benefit from increased parent engagement in career development, fostering a supportive and informed community around the student’s future career journey.
  • When parents are involved in career education, students receive consistent, positive reinforcement from both home and school, helping to boost their motivation and clarity in their career goals.
  •  A strong partnership between parents and schools is crucial in ensuring students receive the best possible career guidance. This creates a cohesive support system that maximizes the student’s success.

Careers Fairs + Events

  • Our company provides a professional, engaging, and informative stand at careers events to offer students and parents direct access to career guidance, resources, and insights. With a range of interactive materials and expert advisors on hand, we help attendees explore career pathways, gain advice, and feel more confident about their future career decisions.
  • Having experts on-site means students and parents can receive tailored advice, ask in-depth questions, and get immediate feedback, making the career guidance process more accessible and actionable.
  • At our stand, students can discuss their career aspirations one-on-one with our advisors, receive personalized advice on career options, and explore pathways that align with their skills and interests (e.g., HE, apprenticeships, further education, vocational training, or direct employment).
  • By having our stand at your careers event, we add value to your school’s career program, offering students a professional and interactive experience that complements classroom-based career education.

Employability Skills

  • EC Careers designed a workshop adjusted to the year groups Y9s and Y10s- aimed at giving student the experience in business and enterprise, and developing presenting skills. Students are challenged and motivated to practice key employability skills. This activity is usually 2 hours long, depending on the group size.
  • The students are divided into groups and tasked with inventing a product or service, considering the costs of design, manufacture and marketing. The teams then present their product to the other groups in the workshop.
  • Interactive learning is more engaging and fun for students compared to traditional methods. Students have the chance to take ownership of their learning through practical tasks and creative activities.

  • When students are actively engaged, they are more likely to retain the knowledge and skills learned. They also become more enthusiastic about exploring career opportunities and understanding their potential paths, leading to higher levels of participation and interest in career development.
  • The workshop focuses on essential skills that employers seek, such as communication, teamwork, time management, problem-solving, leadership, and adaptability. By developing these skills, students become aware of what is needed to become well-rounded candidates for any profession.
  • Many students may focus solely on their academic achievements and overlook the importance of being work-ready in other areas. By participating in these activities, they will start to understand the full spectrum of preparation needed to enter the workforce successfully.
  • Through activities that mimic real-world job scenarios, students experience first-hand what professionalism in the workplace might look like. This includes understanding workplace etiquette, communication norms, and how to manage themselves in a professional environment.
